Dr. Paul Martin-Smith, MD, FRCPC

Paul Martin-Smith has been involved with medical education for more than 20 years. In addition to organizing traditional CME seminars and meetings, he has served as a medical director, consultant and CME project coordinator for the “North Network,” which provides real-time, audio/visual, and interactive medical education to physicians in remote and rural settings in Ontario. He has served as president and representative of his local medical society for over 10 years, and served for two terms as chief of his hospital’s Department of Medicine. Dr. Martin-Smith’s current CME interest involves the study of barriers impeding the movement from clinical guidelines to their implementation.

Dr. Peter Newman, MD, CCFP, FCFP

A recipient of the Community Teacher of the Year Award from the Ontario College of Family Physicians, Peter Newman is both in active practice and an assistant professor with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. An experienced group facilitator, Dr. Newman has been president of the Medical Staff Association and is a former member of the Board of Governors at North York General Hospital (NYGH). He is founder and coordinator of the Canada-Dominica Outreach Program, which combines medical aid to Dominica with training for Canadian residents. In recognition of this work, the NYGH has established an annual Peter R. Newman Humanitarian Award in his honour.

Dr. Virginia Clark, BSc, BN, MD, CCFP, IBCLC

Health has been a passion since graduating from the University of Calgary Medical school in 1998 and, through a number of pursuits, Ginny is heavily involved in promoting family practice obstetrics at the clerkship, residency and physician level in Calgary.

Dr. Benjamin Burko, MD

Dr. Burko is a Pediatrician at Montreal Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the McGill University Health Centre. He is currently active in the Emergency Department on a part-time basis. He is also Pediatric Medical Director, and President of Tiny Tots Medical Centre, the largest privately held pediatric ambulatory care facility in Canada. His responsibilities include Practice Manager for 38 physicians and therapists and overseeing the e-business strategy for the center which has over 100,000 patient visits per year. He is nationally recognized for his work in practice management.

LCol (Ret’d) Dr. Tim Cook MD, FRCPC, DTMH, CD

Dr. Cook is a lecturer at University of Toronto, Dept of Medicine and staff physician at Mt Sinai Hospital. He is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Tropical Medicine and holds a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of London, England, as well as certification from the American Society of Tropical Medicine. He retired from the Canadian Forces Health Service in 2003 after 20 years of service and several international deployments. At the time of his retirement he was the Surgeon General’s senior advisor in internal medicine. Dr. Cook directs a travel clinic, consults to the Canadian Forces Environmental Medicine Establishment at Defence R & D – Toronto, and is completing a Masters Degree in Public Health (Health Systems Management). Dr. Cook’s research interests are in health promotion and integration of western, allopathic medicine with complementary and alternative medicine.

Dr. Derek Puddester, BA BMedSc MD MEd FRCPC

Dr. Derek Puddester is an Associate Professor at uOttawa’s Faculty of Medicine where he also is the Director of the Faculty Wellness Program. The program provides support, advocacy, research, and educational services to medical students, residents, and practicing physicians. Dr. Puddester is also a Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where he co-leads the Behavioural Neurosciences and Consultation-Liaison Team. He completed his undergraduate training at Memorial University of Newfoundland, residency at McMaster, and fellowship at uOttawa. In 2008, he completed an MEd in Teaching/Learning at uOttawa with his research focused on physician health education. Dr. Puddester has developed several national and international curricular resources on physician health including www.ephysicianhealth.ca, eworkplacehealth.ca, the Royal College of Physician and Surgeon’s Physician Health Guide, and the Canadian Medical Association’s undergraduate curriculum in physician health.

Mr. Michael Fraleigh, B.A., J.D.

Michael is a Partner at Fogler, Rubinoff LLP where he heads the health law group. He is also a former member of the Firm’s Executive Committee. Michael has extensive experience in all aspects of health law including the representation of physicians in regulatory matters involving complaints, discipline, quality assurance, fitness to practice and registration issues. He has represented numerous physicians in hospital privilege disputes as well as in matters involving the management and business operations of a medical practice including billing issues. He also advises hospitals, corporations and institutions with respect to health law issues. Michael is also an experienced medical malpractice litigator having both defended physicians and represented plaintiffs. Michael is a frequent speaker at continuing education programs for health care practitioners and lawyers on issues relating to health law and medical practice. Michael is a past chair of the Ontario Bar Association Health Law Section and Past President of the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto.
